Training Advances Careers

Ron Hicks of Teamsters Union No. 776 says that Industry Partnership funding is providing valuable training and "helping to create career ladders." Ron tells us that profit margins are small in Logistics and Transportation. "In economic downturns," he says, "training gets cut."

However, currently they are involved in some great programs to make drivers safer. "These might not have been available without the funding." Hicks says incumbent worker training for mechanics in welding and electronics have helped companies keep repair work in-house. Industry Partnership funding also makes it easier for dock workers to become truck drivers.

The unions and the companies are working together to advance worker skills and create a better workforce. "It's very rewarding," he says.
